Thrilling battle in the opening race of Qatar Superstock: Al Naimi wins in the last corner

Last Updated on 23 January 2017

Mishal Al Naimi won the opening race of the Qatar Superstock600 in an exciting and thrilling battle with Saeed Al Sulaiti and Nasser Al Malki.

Al Nami who got the pole position yesterday in the Superpole manage to take the lead during half of the race but Al Sulaiti and Al Malki were too close to him that it was impossible for him to create a gap.

‘ I am very happy with this result, I didn’t expect a fight too challenging with Saeed and Nasser, they were very fast and fight a lot to win the race. When I started the race, I felt I was very fast and after 3 laps I looked back and I saw Saeed and Nasser behind me and I thought I cannot push until the end of the race like this and I am luck I won the race in the last lap, it was a very good race’ said Al Naimi after his win.

In the sixth lap, Al Sulati overtook Al Naimi and tried to keep this position until the end of the race but in the last lap, Al Naimi passed him and won the race. ‘ It was a dramatic race, one of the races I enjoyed most, I was expecting a fight but not from the start until the end. When it was five laps to go I tried to overtake Mishal and create a gap but unfortunately it was not possible to get distance and in the straight line of the last lap he overtook me. Happy with my performance but not with the second position and I push more in the second race. Congratulations to all the riders and winner and thanks to MOCS, QMMF and LCSC’ said Al Sulaiti.

The podium was completed by Nasser Al Malki who finished in third place. ‘I am very happy today, but not lucky enough. The race in the beginning ws good with the bike and tyres but after seven laps I started to lose my feeling in the bike and I slide a lot with the rear tyre and the suspension I think it was stocked when I pushed more hard , I didn’t respect this lap time, I can go more I feel but the problem was that I couldn’t push more the bike. I started to lose the grip and lose my position lap by lap but I keep the gap not far and hope race 2 better as I have all the race grip now’ Al Malki said.

Trophies were presented by HE Minister of Culture and Sports,  Salah bin Ghanim Al Ali,  Mr. Abdulrahman Al Mannai QMMF President  and Mr. Khalid AL Remaihi  LCSC Vice President & General Manager

In the second race of the day, Saeed Al Sulaiti took the lead and managed to keep the first position almost until the end of the race but again in the straight Mishal Al Naimi passed him winning the race.

‘I made different strategy for this race and when I started the race I stayed behind Saeed to keep the tyre good and in the middle of the race I tried to push and try to make big gap. In the last two laps, I stayed in front finishing the race again in first position. I am very happy to keep this results for the Ooredoo team and thanks to them and to QMMF and LCSC for this great championship’ said the two times winner.

For Saeed Al Sulaiti, this is the first time he is racing with a 600cc bike and in overall he is very happy with his performance ‘The race was good, I was leading from the first lap but Mishal overtook me almost at the end of the race in the straight line and in the last lap I tried to overtake him but it was really difficult although I did my best lap time trying that. Happy in general being my first races with the 600cc, so it is not bad to start like that and let’s see how it goes the other 5 rounds and I’ll try to be consistent. Congratulations to Mishal and Nasser to be in the podium and thanks to QMMF and LCSC for the championship’ said Saeed.

As in the first race, Nasser Al Malki finished in the third position.  ‘At the beginning of the race I tried to be with Saeed and Mishal because they were already fastest than me during all the practice but I need to adjust more the bike to follow them. It was a very clear race, no fight with anyone and every lap I tried to close the gap between me and Saeed and Mishal. In the last three laps, I was close to them but I made a mistake in the first corner and went a little wide outside and no possible to catch them. Overall I am happy with the result and thanks to all my team, friends, QMMF and LCSC for their support’ Al Malki stated.

Ali Al Shammari finished in fourth place and Fahad Al Sowaidi in fifth position. It was a good result for Abdulla Al Qubaisi who ended in a sixth place.

The next round of the QSTK600 will be on the 3rd February
